How often should I get a pregnancy massage?
One of the questions asked regularly at Pelvic Love Massage Therapy is how often should I get a massage during pregnancy.
The answer depends on many factors such as time, money, your pain, your baby, etc… Taking all of those out of the equation here is a schedule I often recommend.
Typically, We see pregnancy clients sometime after their 12th-week check up, although we can treat you before this time. We start with every 4 weeks to keep your body adjusting to the aches, pains and changes of pregnancy.
Once your baby reaches week 25/26 Your bump will be getting noticeably bigger, and with changes, come a change in your body's centre of gravity. This will put strain on the lower back, which can cause aching, stiffness and possible sciatic related symptoms. There is often a need for weekly treatments to offset these major changes in the body.
Breast changes and growth often pull on the muscles of your neck and upper back, so often pregnant persons experience pain and stiffness in both the upper back and neck, which could be triggering headaches if severe.
If this isn't your first pregnancy - you may ache a little earlier than the first pregnancy. You may need treatment to offset this a little earlier than you have budgeted for. If you find the you are suffering from problems such as pelvic girdle pain, oedema or cramping , you might want to have a massage more regularly to help alleviate any pain and reduce any swelling.
But for general well-being, here is my recommend schedule as a guide: Notwithstanding having any issues before pregnancy that is causing functional issues.
* Week 12
* Week 16
* Week 20
* Week 24
* Week 26
* Week 28
* Week 30
* Week 35
* Week 36
* Week 37
* Week 38
* Week 39
* Week 40+
We see pregnancy clients for other things during the last few weeks, some have breathing issues, breech babies, Carpal Tunnel release, severe heart burn, broad or round ligament referral pain, perineal massage training, etc... your suggested schedule really depends on what is happening with your pregnant body!
Hope this helps you plan your massage schedule, and as always; reach out to us with any questions.
In great health & gratitude,
Deborah
